The bottom line? “Stone Cold” Steve Austin is still a ratings machine.
The Monday edition of WWE “Raw,” buoyed by guest host Austin, averaged a 3.71 rating and 5.6 million viewers. The competing TNA “Impact” averaged a .84 rating and 1.1 million viewers. After a hot start last week, TNA viewership fell 24 percent from March 8 when 1.4 million people watched the show’s debut.
TNA officials can make a few immediate improvements to the show:
• Do not let Hulk Hogan wrestle. Hogan’s daughter, Brooke, nailed the sentiments of most wrestling fans when she said last week she never wanted to see her bloodied father “like this again.” Amen. Hogan has never been particularly mobile — even in the Hogan heyday, his finishing move was a leg drop — and his advanced age has made watching him unbearable. Hogan can still be an effective behind-the-microphone personality.
• Showcase the talent. The Scott Hall/Kevin Nash abomination never should have taken place. Let viewers see more of the X-Division. Wrestling fans want to watch wrestling.
• Go get Bobby Lashley (again). Though not a proficient wrestler, Lashley is the most recognizable name and most popular grappler TNA could sign. Sure, the former WWE star is busy with mixed martial arts, but he would probably be willing to return to the squared circle for the right price.
• Samoa Joe, where are you? Joe is one of the organization’s most talented and popular performers. Use him.
