Georgia softball stars lose twice by one run

CHATTANOOGA — Soddy-Daisy (Tenn.) graduate Kelsey Nunley and Gordon Lee alum Brenna Nation were prime candidates to give softball fans a pitchers’ duel Wednesday night at Frost Stadium.

That’s exactly what the crowd got.

The two summer ball teammates with the 18-Under Tennessee Mustangs battled for seven innings in Game 1 of the 15th annual Stump on Sports Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Softball Classic, with Nunley and her Volunteer State teammates scratching out a 1-0 win.

Tennessee completed its 10th doubleheader sweep in the series with a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

Nunley, a University of Kentucky signee and the 2012 Gatorade Tennessee Softball Player of the Year, set a new All-Star Classic record with 13 strikeouts, breaking the record of Soddy-Daisy great Nikki Waters, who blanked 12 hitters in the 2007 Classic.

Nunley helped herself at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance in Game 1, including a double.

She was later presented with the newly-christened Clifford Kirk All-Star Classic MVP award.

Emily Dagnan (Sequatchie County) was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI in Game 2 and took home Tennessee Player of the Game honors. Kendall Johnson (Gordon Lee), the Georgia Player of the Game, reached base three times in the doubleheader, scoring once, and stealing three bases.
