The storms that blew through Northwest Georgia on Friday kept most area high school softball teams from opening the season as they’d intended.
Dalton, Murray County and Southeast Whitfield were all scheduled to start their 2012 seasons at Alto Park in Rome in the Model Lady Devils Classic. However, all of Friday’s games in the tournament were washed out by the rains, condensing the two-day affair into a very long day on the diamond today. According to the Rome News-Tribune, Model head coach Brett White said play will start at 10 a.m.
The planned round-robin tournament will now have pool play followed by two semifinal games and a championship game from the pool winners. Those teams not advancing to the championship bracket will face a team from a different pool in a consolation game, meaning each team in the tournament is guaranteed at least four games.
Northwest Whitfield was also scheduled to start its season on Friday, but the Lady Bruins’ opener at Whitewater High was postponed because of storms in Fayetteville. That game was rescheduled for 2 p.m. on Sept. 15.
Christian Heritage was scheduled to play a pair of games Friday at a tournament hosted by Harlem High near Augusta. Lady Lions coach Michael Leonard did not return a message seeking results by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.
