Area roundup: Northwest girls get past Dalton on golf course

Northwest Whitfield’s Turner Fordham shot a 4-over 40 on Thursday at Dalton Golf and Country Club to lead the Lady Bruins to an 84-88 golf victory over rival Dalton.

Casey Truelove posted a 44 for the Lady Bruins.

Dalton’s Hannah Duffie shot 40 to share medalist honors with Fordham and Brendi Rockholt had a 48.



Varsity baseball

Southeast Whitfield 8, Pickens County 0: Dylan Massengill hit a two-run home run and pitched a two-hitter over five innings for Southeast.

Bradley Grant had three singles and drove in two runs to aid Southeast’s 12-hit attack. Esteban Marquez had two hits and two RBIs, while Kyle Hale and Will Smithey each added two hits.

T.J. Lovain pitched two innings and gave up one hit.



Varsity tennis

Rome boys 4, Northwest Whitfield 1: Austin Poole and Nathan Davies, the Cats’ No. 2 doubles team, posted a 7-6, 6-4 victory for the Bruins (1-5).

• The Rome girls beat Northwest’s Lady Bruins, 5-0. Northwest is 2-4.

Murray County boys 3, Rome 1: No. 1 singles Will Ross won 6-3, 7-5 for the Indians (2-1, 1-0 Region 7-4A) in a Tuesday match. In doubles, No. 1 Beau Booth and Andrew Miles won 6-2, 6-4 and No. 2 Chris Tate and Brandon Garcia won 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Rome girls 4, Murray County 1: No. 3 singles Jade Mathis won 6-0, 6-3 for the Lady Indians (2-1, 0-1).

North Murray boys 5, Ridgeland 0: Mountaineers winners were No. 1 singles Drew Mosteller 6-0, 6-2, No. 2 Dylan Davis 6-1, 6-0, and No. 3 Ross Whitman 6-0, 6-1. Ridgeland defaulted both doubles matches.

North Murray girls 5, Ridgeland 0: No. 1 singles Alex Westmoreland won 6-3, 6-0 and No. 2 Chelsea Cochran won 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles, No. 1 Andrea Dunn and Alicia Townsend won 6-2, 6-1.

Ridgeland defaulted at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles.



JV golf

Dalton boys 173, Northwest Whitfield 198: Beau Ridley led the Catamounts with a 40. Chris Kazmierski posted a 43, Spencer Peters 44, and Pierson Scarborough 46.

Sam Speights had a 48 for the Bruins while Tyler Roberts, Clay Kittle and Wesley York each carded 50s.



MS baseball

Dalton 3, Bagley 0: In seventh-grade action, Jackson Bell had a run-scoring single and Spencer Cross and Wyatt Erwin combined on a two-hitter for the Cougars (1-1). Cross had six strikeouts.

Valley Point 7, Westside 6: Rhett Harper went 3-for-3 with a double and scored three runs for the Green Waves on Monday. Harper also was the winning pitcher and struck out 11 over 5 2/3 innings. He gave up three hits.

Damian Manning had three hits, including a double, and Austin Purkey had two hits for Valley Point.

Abram Stanley got a bases-loaded strikeout for the final out and picked up the save.



MS soccer

Eastbrook boys 8, Gladden 0: Jaime Arenas, Miguel Hernandez and Armando Rangel each had two goals for the Mustangs (1-1). Alex Garcia and David Gonzalez each scored one goal.

Eastbrook girls 4, Gladden 0: Andrea Lopez had two goals and two assists for the Lady Mustangs (1-1). Selena Barragan also scored twice.
