Northwest overpowers rival Southeast

There was a slugfest on the diamond in Tunnel Hill on Tuesday.

Three home runs were hit between Northwest Whitfield and Southeast Whitfield’s baseball teams in one inning, they combined for 26 hits in the game and, when it was all over, Northwest walked away with a 12-7 win.

The victorious Bruins (4-1) finished with 11 hits in the non-region game, including back-to-back home runs by Ethan Parker and Jarrett Bruce in the sixth inning.

Carter Thames was 2-for-2 with two RBIs, Jordan Darnell and Miguel Orozco each added a two-run double and Bradley Stevenson doubled in a run.

Darnell picked up the win, going four innings and striking out five, walking two and surrendering two runs, one of which was earned.

The game’s third home run came from Bradley Grant, who hit a two-run shot for the Raiders (3-4) in the sixth.

Grant finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Tanner McCutcheon was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, Austin Fowler was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Dylan Massengill was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Esgardo Chavarria took the loss, giving up four runs (one earned) on four hits in 2 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out two.

• Ringgold 4, Dalton 3: Stryker Brown got Dalton’s only two hits and drove in two runs for the visiting Catamounts (1-1). Alex Roberts pitched all six innings, striking out 10, walking none, hitting two batters and surrendering eight hits and three earned runs.

• Griffin Christian 7, Christian Heritage 3: The Lions, who hosted and lost their season opener, were led by Wesley Sheppard, who had a hit, an RBI and scored a run. Michael McKinney took the loss, going five innings and giving up five hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out three and walking one.

Varsity golf

• Northwest Whitfield girls 82, Ringgold 118: The Lady Bruins won their first match of the year with counting scores from medalists Turner Fordham and Casey Truelove, who each shot a 41 in the nine-hole round at Nob North. Because of darkness, Northwest’s Taylor Boyd and Sara Kate Searing were unable to complete their round.

Varsity soccer

• Southeast boys 7, LFO 0: The visiting Raiders (5-1) scored hree goals in 10 minutes to open the game and got three goals each from Mickey Guerrero and Zeke Nunez. Cesar Maldonado earned the shutout with four saves.

• LFO girls 2, Southeast 0: Lady Raiders (1-5) keeper Karibbe Rodriguez had 18 saves in a losing effort on the road.

• Dalton boys 6, Cass 1: Jesse Gonzalez had three goals for the host Catamounts (3-1, 2-0 in Sub-region 7A-4A). Angel Arellano, Ricky Rodriguez and Rene Real scored the other goals.

• Dalton girls 2, Cass 0: The Lady Cats (2-1-1) improved to 2-0 in Sub-region 7A-4A with the win at Harmon Field. Mary Martinez broke through for a goal in the 20th minute and Ale Salaises followed up five minutes into the second half for the final margin.

Julie Parham was in goal for the shutout and had four saves. Dalton coach Rebecca Snellman said the Lady Cats took 21 shots in the match.

• Christian Heritage girls 2, Griffin Christian 1: The Lady Lions, who hosted and won their season opener, were led by a first-half penalty kick goal from Kirsten Greene and a second-half goal from Marah McEntyre, who was assisted by Rachel Gray. Keeper Rachel Boyd had six saves.

Varsity tennis

• Dalton boys 5, Woodland-Bartow 0: The host Catamounts (4-1) won the Region 7-4A debut for both teams, getting singles victories from No. 1 Hunter Carson, 6-0, 6-1, No. 2 Price Puryear, 6-0, 6-0 and No. 3 Blake Garrett, 6-0, 6-0. In doubles, D.J. Roland and Pratik Bhatter won 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1 slot and Mitchell Wilson and Sam Batts won 6-0, 7-5 at No. 2.

• Calhoun boys 4, Northwest Whitfield 1: The lone win for the visiting Bruins (1-4) came in singles as No. 2 Dillon Flood won 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 10-5 (tiebreaker).

• Dalton girls 3, Woodland 2: The host Lady Catamounts (5-0, 1-0) won the Region 7-4A opener for both teams, getting a singles win from No. 2 Emily Harbin, 6-1, 6-1, and doubles wins from No. 1 Malaka Awad and McKenzie Carlisi, 6-3, 6-4, and No. 2 Clara Norfleet and Vivian Butler, 7-6 (7-0), 6-3.

• Calhoun girls 5, Northwest Whitfield 0: The visiting Lady Bruins fell to 2-3.

JV baseball

• Northwest Whitfield 16, Southeast Whitfield 1: Nick Stavrow, Nick Sullivan and Luke Hensley each had two hits and two RBIs for the Bruins (2-0) in Tunnel Hill. Matt Allen also had two RBIs. Josh Swinford picked up the win, giving up a run on two hits, walking one and striking out six.

JV golf

• Ringgold 173, Northwest Whitfield 196: In a nine-hole match at Nob North, the Bruins faced the Tigers’ varsity squad and were led by Silas Ledford, who shot a 46. Tyler Roberts, Trevor Goodman, Sam Speights, Clay Kittle and Wesley Yourk each shot a 50.

MS softball

• Christian Heritage 8, Grayson 7: Micha Kilgore’s bases-loaded double finished a 2-for-3 effort and won the game for the Lady Lions in their season opener. Megan McKinney was 2-for-2 at the plate and also picked up the win as she went five innings and struck out nine while walking eight and surrendering seven runs on four hits.

MS soccer

• Valley Point boys 3, Westside 2: The Green Waves won the season opener for both teams behind Luis Fraire’s three goals, two of which were assisted by George Soto. Diego Garcia assisted on the other. The Rockets got goals from Ivan Vela and Julio Verdugo.

• Westside girls 6, Valley Point 0: The Lady Rockets won the season opener for both teams with three goals from Ashlee Huynh, two from Arely Torres and one from Peria Casillas.
