— Ryan Scoggins wasn’t sure how Northwest Whitfield’s boys soccer team would respond on Monday after losing to Dalton on penalty kicks three days earlier.
But the Bruins showed their coach they could bounce back with a 2-0 win against Sequoyah in a Sub-region 7A-4A contest in Canton. The game, originally scheduled for today, was bumped up a day in an attempt to beat inclement weather.
“When you lose (to area rival Dalton) by one kick, you’re worried about how they’ll come back,” Scoggins said. “I knew they had the ability to win and they came out with energy against a physical team. ... They stayed focused on the goal of winning.”
Jose Delcid opened the scoring for the Bruins (2-2, 1-1 in 7A-4A) in the 32nd minute, with Mario Perez earning the assist.
Joseph Torres’ goal with four minutes left in the game — also assisted by Perez — iced the victory.
Oscar Solarzano had nine saves for the shutout.
