DALTON — When Northwest Whitfield wins on the baseball field, the Bruins have proven they can overwhelm an opponent with runs.
On Saturday, Northwest won again with a double-digit offensive output, this time thrashing Southeast Whitfield, 15-5, on the Raiders’ home diamond. In their three wins so far, the Bruins have averaged 16 runs with a victory margin of 12.3 and twice have scored 10 runs in an inning. They were shutout by Ridgeland, 4-0, in their only loss.
The Bruins scored two runs in the second inning, five in the fifth and four each in the sixth and seventh innings against the Raiders.
“We played pretty well today,” Bruins coach Todd Middleton said. “Everyone contributed on offense, Cody (Jones) pitched well, and the dense played well behind him. ... We put some things together today.”
Jordan Darnell had a two-run single, Jones an RBI single, Bradley Stevenson a two-run double and Caine Gibson a three-run double for Northwest. Jones pitched five innings, giving up four hits, three walks and two runs while striking out six for the win.
The Bruins had 10 hits, but none had multiple hits.
Esgardo Chavaria was 3-for-3 with two runs to lead Southeast. Dylan Massengill picked up the loss, going 4 1/3 innings and giving up seven runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks. He struck out six.
Raiders coach Brad Lofton did not return messages seeking further information.
• Murray County 11, Fannin County 7: The Indians (3-0) used a six-run fourth inning to put the game away. Houston Headrick was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Taylor Patterson was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Tyler Timms was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a home run for Murray. Cory Satterfield was 1-for-2 with an RBI for the Indians.
And for the second game in a row, Satterfield made a highlight-reel catch crashing into the center-field wall, coach Jason Lanham said.
Chase Jones picked up the win, going four innings and giving up two hits, two walks and no runs while striking out one.
Varsity basketball
• Carver girls 43, Franklin County 38: In the Class 3A tournament quarterfinals at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center, the winning Lady Panthers were led by Bria Dorsey’s 12 points. The Lady Lions got 11 points from Cortnee Golf.
• North Hall boys 53, Riverwood 49: The winning Trojans were led by Chase Syran’s 10 points. The Raiders got 14 points from Alex Vital in the 3A tournament.
• Columbia girls 46, East Hall 17: The winning Lady Eagles were led by Akila McDonald’s 11 points in the 3A tournament. Morgan Jackson had eight points for the Lady Vikings.
Varsity golf
• At the Apple Mountain Invitational at Clarksville, Dalton shot a 297 to finish third overall and was led by Chase Miller’s second-place individual finish. Northwest Whitfield (327) finished “somewhere in the middle of the pack,” Bruins coach Jim McGrew said.
In all, 24 teams participated, with Peachtree Ridge (281) winning, followed by South Forsyth (295) and Dalton.
The Cats were led by Miller (67), Will Morrow (72), William Duffie (78) and Dylan Coffey (80). The Bruins got a 77 from David Lomax while Ben Harris shot 78 and Silas Ledford and Connor Wilson each shot 86.
• Northwest Whitfield’s Turner Fordham and Casey Truelove teamed up to shoot a 78 at the Red Terror Ryder Cup hosted by Glen Academy at Jekyll Island. The pair finished 12th in a 36-team field.
Varsity soccer
• Southeast Whitfield boys 11, LaFayette 1: Bernabe Rangel had a performance worthy of a week’s production — five goals and three assists — to lead the Raiders past outmanned LaFayette in Sub-region 6A-3A action at Southeast.
Sammy Torres got the Raiders going with two goals 2 and 9 minutes into the game.
Mickey Guerrero, Ezequiel Nunez, Romero Madrigal and Osciel Fabela each scored one goal for Southeast (5-1, 4-0 sub-region).
The Raiders outshot the Ramblers, 42-4, and keeper Cesar Maldonado got the shutout.
• Murray County boys 1, Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 1: Carlos Ortiz scored the Indians’ lone goal on a penalty kick with about 10 minutes left in the non-region game, Murray coach Randy Baggett said.
Keeper Juan Leon turned in a solid effort in goal.
• LaFayette girls 3, Southeast 2 (5-3 on PKs): Lady Raiders coach Kevin Kettenring did not return messages requesting further information.
• AC Reynolds girls 5, Dalton 0: The Lady Catamounts (1-1-1) were shut out by the Lady Rockets from Asheville, N.C.
9th baseball
• Northwest Whitfield 5, Southeast Whitfield 2: A.J. Orozco and Brady Middleton each went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Orozco had a double to pace the Bruins (1-0). Kyle Brock was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Tucker Sheram was the winning pitcher, going four innings and giving up six hits. Blake Phillips worked three innings in relief and struck out five.
