	Jennifer Cooley not only received the coveted Female Runner of the Year award Saturday night at the Carpet Capital Running Club&amp;#8217;s banquet celebrating 2011, she was also installed as the organization&amp;#8217;s president, taking over for Randall Godwin.&lt;br /&gt;
	&amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;m happy that my hard work paid off in winning the running award,&amp;#8221; said Cooley, a Tunnel Hill resident, following the annual banquet at The Engine Room restaurant in Dalton. &amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;m honored to be the new president of such a great group of people. We are heading into our 30th year.&amp;#8221;&lt;/p&gt;

	His effort Saturday showed his work paid off, as he repeated as the overall winner in this year&amp;#8217;s 13.1 mile course with a time of 1 hour, 16 minutes and 5 seconds.&lt;br /&gt;
	&amp;#8220;This is one my two biggest races,&amp;#8221; Thompson said. &amp;#8220;Mostly because it is local. I put a lot of effort into this one.&amp;#8221;&lt;/p&gt;

	Two months ago, I knew I wanted to run the Dalton Red Carpet Half Marathon, but I wasn&amp;#8217;t sure I could do it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
	A stomach virus at the beginning of July had me laid up in bed for a week. By the time I&amp;#8217;d recovered enough to resume somewhat normal activity, I couldn&amp;#8217;t even run a mile without stopping for rest. Even before the virus, I never put in more than six or 10 miles in a single week.&lt;br /&gt;
	Still, the idea of a half marathon sounded fun.&lt;/p&gt;

During a summer distance running camp some years ago in the beautiful mountains that surround Brevard, N.C., several elite runners stressed to us that it was important to arrive at the starting line for a race sweating. 	Our local running community is always represented well in the famous Peachtree Road Race, held annually on July 4 in Atlanta since 1970, when the competition only drew 110 participants.&lt;br /&gt;
	The area will make its presence known again Monday morning as a part of the some 60,000 participants who will make their way 6.2 miles from Buckhead and down Peachtree Street to Piedmont Park. The number of runners allowed to register this year was increased by 5,000, which guarantees a new record for the event.&lt;/p&gt;

	Two Tennessee residents, who admittedly were influenced by first-time bonus money for the 31st annual Bill Gregory Healthcare Classic, claimed top honors on a magnificent Saturday morning when temperatures were in the 50s.&lt;br /&gt;
	Allen Thurman, a 22-year-old student at the University of Tennessee-Martin, paced more than 1,200 runners in the feature 5-kilometer in a sizzling 16 minutes and 32 seconds on a challenging course that started and ended at Bradley Welness Center.&lt;/p&gt;
