Nieto, a 2011 Dalton High graduate who excelled as a distance runner, will compete in the 5,000- and 1,500-meter track events at Puebla during the week of May 17-25.
“I will be representing the USA, and I will be wearing the USA uniform,” 18-year-old Nieto proudly declared. “It is a breathtakingly beautiful blessing to represent the country that has seen me grow into a disciplined and determined woman and run in the country where I was born and raised. To be eligible, you have to be a Mexican native.”

Most area runners preparing for marathons will do one or two 20-mile runs as their longest distance in training.
The philosophy is to be on your feet about the same amount of time as the 26.2-mile race. For example, if shooting for a three-hour marathon, one would do a nine-minute training pace that will equate to three hours.
These long runs come after buildups over the weeks. This could include weekly 10-milers, then 13-milers and 16-milers.

Two months ago, I knew I wanted to run the Dalton Red Carpet Half Marathon, but I wasn’t sure I could do it.

A stomach virus at the beginning of July had me laid up in bed for a week. By the time I’d recovered enough to resume somewhat normal activity, I couldn’t even run a mile without stopping for rest. Even before the virus, I never put in more than six or 10 miles in a single week.
Still, the idea of a half marathon sounded fun.
