Swimming: Dolphins break 3 records at GRPA District 5 meet

The Dalton Dolphins broke three records Saturday at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District 5 Swimming Championships in Douglasville.

Coach Charles Todd said 37 Dolphins swimmers qualified for the GRPA state meet on July 30-31 in Carrollton.

“Us and Cherokee County pretty much dominated the meet,” Todd said. “Of the five records broken, we had three of them. We had some really good swims.”

Stephen Jones broke two marks in the 15-18 boys division.

He swam the 50-yard freestyle in 22.03 seconds for one record and his 25.66 in the 50 backstroke shattered the old mark of 26.03 he set in 2009.

Jones’ brother, Chas, broke the 13-14 age group 50 backstroke record with a time of 27.57. A former Dalton swimmer, Nelson Rhinehart, held the old mark of 28.13 set in 2001. Chas Jones also won the 100 freestyle in 53.45.

Reese Bingham won the 50 free in 30.75 and the 100 individual medley with a time of 1:22.56.

Oscar Chenard won the 25 breaststroke in 22.81 and the 25 butterfly in 18.30.

Mark Naguib took the 100 free in 53.15, Emilio Valdez won the 25 free in 16.38, Miranda Storey took first place in the 50 back in 31.27 and Alex Mashburn won the 25 back in 17.89.

Chas Jones, Alex Wood, Taylor Mathis and Alan Trejo combined to win the 200 medley and 200 free relays in 2:04.15 and 1:47.71, respectively.
