Local squads suffer losses

It was a tough opening night for three local teams in the Dixie Majors state baseball tournament at Edwards Park.

The Whitfield Nationals, who got a home run from Seth Hutchinson, suffered a 7-2 loss at the hands of Albany International in a Red Bracket game.

Whitfield will play Newton County today at 10 a.m. Newton County lost to Troup County, 3-1.

The Dalton All-Stars were defeated, 5-4, by Wrens on a game-winning two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the other early game, Duluth beat Albany American, 4-1, and will take on Wrens today at noon.

The local disappointment continued into the round of 9 p.m. games when Whitfield American was beaten, 2-0, by Auburn.

The tournament runs through July 23 when the Red Bracket survivor and the winner of the Blue Bracket tangle in a best-of-three series. The first game of that series will be played on July 22 with a doubleheader on July 23, if necessary.
