Gibson goes deep in 11th

Kaine Gibson’s three-run homer in the bottom of the 11th brought an end to an extended baseball season opener for Northwest Whitfield as the Bruins toppled Gordon Lee 10-7 on Monday night in Tunnel Hill.

Gibson’s walk-off homer was his second hit of the day as he finished with five RBIs after driving in a pair of runs in the fourth as well.

Northwest trailed 7-3 after five innings, and the Bruins had to score four runs in the sixth to tie the game up and force the extra frames.

Andy Whisenant pitched scoreless work to get the last two outs in the fifth and in the sixth before giving way to Seth Pierce. The freshman responded in a big way, pitching five innings of scoreless ball, striking out 11 and allowing just three hits.

Edwin Hernandez led the Bruins at the plate, going 5-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, Nick Stavrow and Pierce were also 2-for-5. Clean-up hitter Luke Hensley was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored.
