Lady Bruins win 8-7 despite losing focus

Northwest Whitfield’s softball team overcame a mid-game rain delay and multiple two-run rallies to beat Madison County 7-6 in eight innings Monday at North Georgia College and State University.

The game — Northwest’s season opener and first under coach Jason Brooker — was tied 6-6 after seven innings and went to the international tiebreaker in the eighth.

Lady Bruins reliever Brileigh Baggett took over for starter Emily Boyd with two outs in the seventh and held Madison County scoreless in the top of the eighth. She picked up the win after Mallory Souther scored in the bottom half of the inning.

Souther was the Lady Bruins’ designated runner on second for the tiebreaker, and after Northwest’s first batter in the inning was hit by a pitch, Southern scored on a Madison County throwing error when Bayley Marquardt bunted.

Colbie Thomas led Northwest at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs, while Hannah Godfrey was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Ashley Connor was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Macy Weeks and Souther both had doubles.

Boyd allowed six earned runs on four hits while walking six and striking out as many.

The Lady Bruins took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth, but a 30-minute rain delay put them out of their rhythm, Brooker said. The Lady Bruins trailed 4-3 after five, but took a 6-4 lead in the sixth before losing the lead in the seventh.
