North Murray picked up its second consecutive victory and clinched the program’s highest win total in a season with a 57-44 shootout triumph at Dade County.
The Mountaineers and Wolve-rines were tied at 7 after the first quarter and North Murray had a 29-22 advantage at halftime. The third quarter was the big one as the Mountaineers scored three touchdowns and broke the game open with a 50-22 lead.
The Mountaineers rushed for 441 yards last week, and David Gann said the Wolverines crowded the line of scrimmage to try and take away North Murray’s ground game.
“They tried to stack the box to take the run away, which was a very smart move by their coaching staff,” Gann said. “So we had to spread out and start throwing a little bit. We were able to spread it out and throw and run it. We’re always going to try to do what they let us do.”
The all-senior backfield for the Mountaineers still had a big day, carrying the ball a combined 38 times for 313 yards. North Murray had 360 yards total on the ground. Running back Jacob Mays had 56 yards on 10 carries, and fullback Christian Bukle had 106 yards off of just eight carries.
Mays and Bukle each had two rushing scores and one receiving. John Chastain also added a rushing touchdown.
Quarterback Brady Swill-ing had a big day all around, throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for another. He had 269 yards of total offense.
“We threw the ball well,” Gann said. “As the same as last week, he also ran the ball well. He made a lot of things happen with his arm and his legs tonight.”
Dade County fought back into the game with 22 points in the fourth quarter.
“We started subbing a few folks, “Gann said, “but what happened was we had a fumble and some penalties and they had some big plays. We look up and they are starting to creep back in the ball game. They are very well coached and have a couple of big-play kids.”
North Murray is now 2-0 and doubled the program’s win total from its first two seasons, when it went 1-19. However, Gann does not want his players to rest on what they already have accomplished.
“Our goal is to work to win the region championship and get in the playoffs and do those things,” Gann said. “They expect to win. That is one of the mentalities we want to change around here. It’s just two games. There’s a lot of games left and a lot of good teams. We will celebrate this right now but tomorrow we will wake up and start preparing for Johnson-Gainesville.”
