Northwest Whitfield’s Emily Boyd struck out 11 — and shook off five walks — in allowing just two hits to lead the Lady Bruins softball team to a 1-0 victory against North Murray on Friday in the Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Invitational.
Northwest scored quickly in the first inning at the Jack Mattox Complex in Ringgold. Mallory Souther drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Mykeah Johnson, whose two-out double was followed by consecutive walks by North Murray’s Hannah Hensley, one of which was an intentional pass for Bayli Cruse.
Boyd then made that lead hold up, despite a couple of jams. North Murray coach Daphne Winkler, who said Megan Pittman and Kara Deal had the team’s hits in the loss, said the Lady Mountaineers (2-2) had the bases loaded at least twice, although with two outs.
Cruse finished 2-for-3 and Karlie Henson added a triple for the Lady Bruins (3-0).
Hensley allowed five hits, walked three and struck out one on her way to the loss.
Northwest also beat Sonoraville 9-1 at the two-day pool play event, with Lady Bruins pitcher Brileigh Baggett earning her second win of the season.
The lone run allowed by Baggett was unearned. She gave up two hits, struck out one and walked one.
At the plate, Macy Weeks was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Johnson, Cruse and Hannah Godfrey each were 2-for-3 and Colbie Thomas was 2-for-4. Johnson had a triple and Cruse added a double.
Today, Northwest plays Marist at 11 a.m., Gordon Lee at 1 p.m. and Holy Innocents’ at 3 p.m.
North Murray had started the afternoon with a 4-0 win against Murray County, scoring all but one of its runs in the first inning and tallying seven hits in the game.
Those hits were spread out, though, with no player recording more than one. Samantha Stafford singled and reached on a walk, while Kara Deal doubled.
Deal also pitched for the win, allowing three hits and two walks.
Shea Pendley led Murray County (2-3) by going 2-for-3 with a double.
Today, North Murray plays Holy Innocents’ at 9 a.m., Harris County at 11 a.m. and Christian Heritage at 3 p.m.
Murray County bounced back with a 7-0, five-inning win against Christian Heritage. Pendley doubled and walked twice, while Lindsey Dunn had a double and reached base after being hit by a pitch. The Lady Indians scored four runs in the first and three in the fifth.
Dunn pitched for the win, allowing a pair of hits and three walks while striking out one.
Today, Murray County plays Sonoraville at 11 a.m., Holy Innocents’ at 1 p.m. and Gordon Lee at 5 p.m.
Coahulla Creek also split its first-day games at the event, falling 3-1 to Sonoraville in six innings before beating Holy Innocents’ 8-0 in five innings.
Shelbe Dilbeck picked up the shutout victory for the Lady Colts (2-1), allowing four hits and no walks while striking out four. At the plate, she was one of four Lady Colts who went 2-for-3, along with Emily Banks, Kala Franks and Allie Thompson. Franks drove in two runs and scored twice, Thompson scored twice and Banks and Dilbeck each scored one run and drove in another.
Nikki Hollis added a hit and two RBIs, Lasha Hedden had a hit, a run and an RBI, Victoria Laird had a hit and drove in a run and Harley Jackson singled and scored.
In the loss to Sonoraville, the Lady Colts were held to three hits, all by different players.
Today, Coahulla Creek plays Dade County at 9 a.m., Christian Heritage at 1 p.m. and Harris County at 3 p.m.
Christian Heritage coach Mike Leonard said he did not immediately have results available from the Lady Lions’ other game Friday.
