A year ago, a perfect run through the sub-region schedule wasn’t a surprise for Dalton High’s girls basketball team.
This year, the Lady Catamounts were looking to replace three players who are now in college uniforms, and some thought their run toward back-to-back Sub-region 7A-3A titles might be an uphill struggle.
It was more of a walk in the park.
Led by Maddie Howell’s 23 points and 18 from senior Chandler McKinney, the Lady Cats led LaFayette by 19 with less than four minutes gone in the first half Tuesday at the Cats Den and rolled to their second straight perfect mark in sub-region play with a 65-29 victory.
Dalton will go into next week’s Region 7-3A tournament at Murray County needing to win just one game to advance to the Clas 3A state tournament.
Quaniesha McCurty (Indiana), Amanda Rector (North Georgia) and April Besley (Reinhardt College) had to be replaced by coach Jeff McKinney coming into this year, but he still thought the Lady Cats could repeat as sub-region champions.
“Just not the way we did it,” he said. “I knew it was possible, but if you had told me before the season that we would have games like this, I would have told you that you were crazy.”
All of Dalton’s sub-region victories were by 10 or more points.
“We had always hoped we would win the title again, but we knew we had to work at it,” said Chandler McKinney, who along with Anna Kate Snyder was honored on senior night. “Last year we had times when we were just physically better than everyone else. It hasn’t been that way this year.”
Snyder agreed, saying this year’s team has had to work a lot harder.
“After losing the state title last year, we knew that we would have to do more to get back there,” Snyder said.
