Georgia swept in All-Star prep basketball

Two local stars score double digit points, one gets Georgia honor

CHATTANOOGA — The Stump on Sports Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Boys Basketball Classic has a history of fantastic finishes, and the 10th annual version at Notre Dame High School produced another barnburner on Tuesday night.

Led by the game’s MVP, Jarod Rhodes (Cleveland), and Tennessee Player of the Game C.J. Reese (McCallie), the boys from the Volunteer State rallied from down 10 points in the final 4:30 to pull off a 101-98 victory to take a 7-3 lead in the all-time series.

It’s the seventh game in the series decided by eight or fewer points.

Georgia led 89-79 with 4:30 to play, but Tennessee saved its best for last, pecking away at the deficit until Rhodes’ layup with 36 seconds left tied the game at 98. Tennessee was up by three with 20 seconds remaining, and Georgia missed a late 3-pointer and a last-second half-court heave.

Tristen Harrell (Dalton) took home Georgia Player of the Game honors with 19 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Tyler Duckett (North Murray) had 10 points, including 6-for-6 shooting at the foul line.

The girls’ game started out with a similar script, but finished with far less drama.

Team Tennessee fell behind early, caught up quickly, then turned on the afterburners to race their way to a 100-52 win, setting records for highest single game score and highest margin of victory in the history of the series.

Team Georgia came out of the blocks on fire, storming out to a surprising 11-2 lead just five minutes into the first 16-minute half. But Tennessee would slowly begin to chip away at the lead before back-to-back 3-pointers by Kayla Beavers (Bradley Central) would give her team its first lead, 25-24, with 5:43 remaining in the half.
