No. 1 versus No. 2 is always fun.

Calhoun and Ridgeland again topped the Northwest Georgia Prep Power Poll this week and have a looming matchup Friday in Calhoun.

The Daily Citizen invited nine publications to participate and vote on a weekly top-10 list from 31 GHSA high schools in the defined area, which is made up of Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Gordon, Murray, Polk, Walker and Whitfield counties. Six publications voted last week and this week, and the Yellow Jackets garnered all first-place votes each time. Ridgeland had five second-place votes and one third-place vote.

Calhoun, which won the Class 2A state title in 2011, returns senior quarterback Taylor Lamb, who has committed to the University of South Alabama.

“Taylor makes us go,” Calhoun coach Hal Lamb, Taylor’s uncle, told the Calhoun Times after the Yellow Jackets defeated Rome 31-0 in a preseason scrimmage. “He’s about as good as it gets. And our receivers played well tonight and made some good catches. We’ve got two good running backs in Alex Urbano and Tydus (Curtis), and our offensive line is deeper than we’ve ever had.”

Ridgeland has a highly touted college prospect in Vonn Bell, a safety and wide receiver.

Despite winning the only game played in the Northwest Georgia area last week, Dalton moved down a spot in the rankings. The Catamounts were ranked third in last week’s preseason rankings. After a 21-19 win against Ringgold, which was ranked 10th and stays at the spot, Dalton fell behind Cartersville by two points. The Cats face Calhoun in a home opener on Sept. 7.

Northwest Whitfield is the only new team in the poll this week, garnering the ninth spot. Last week the Bruins had 11 points and just missed making the top 10. This week, they replace Darlington in the rankings. Northwest will travel Friday for its season opener against Pepperell, which is ranked seventh this week after starting eighth last week and switching with Gordon Central.

The only other change this week was Rome jumping from sixth to fifth ahead of Cedartown.
