CHATSWORTH — Tiffany Christopher was nervous when she came to the plate Monday with the game on the line.
She has no reason to lack confidence the next time Murray County relies on her in the big moment.
The freshman softball player put down a squeeze bunt with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, landing it to the right of Coahulla Creek pitcher Shelbe Dilbeck and allowing fellow freshman Aubrie Osborne to slide safely into home plate to win the game 4-3.
Under the international tiebreaker rules, Osborne started on second to begin Murray County’s half of the eighth. A sacrifice bunt from Lindsey Dunn moved Osborne to third. Two squeeze bunts loaded the bases without getting a run across as Dilbeck was able to hold Osborne at third. That brought Christopher to the plate and she received the order from her coach, Sandra Johnston, to lay down the winning bunt. It was a situation she said she had never been in before.
“When she told me, I was like, ‘I hope I don’t pop it up.’ Every bad thing that could happen I thought of,” Christopher said. “I’m not the kind that has a lot of confidence. I just told myself, ‘Come on, girl. Get it together.’”
Christopher coming through gave Murray County (4-5) another win after going winless in 2011, an improvement that left Johnston ecstatic after the game.
“Now you see why I’m excited,” Johnston said.
Coahulla Creek coach Rhett Parrott was the opposite of excited as Sub-region 5A-3A play starts today at Ringgold beginning at 5:55 p.m.
“I’m not very happy right now with how we’re playing,” Parrott said. “We haven’t put together a complete game yet.”
In the first inning the Lady Colts (3-4) started off with a single from Haley Reece, who advanced to second on a wild pitch and then third and home on two ground balls. In the second, Dilbeck landed a two-out blooper into shallow right-center, scoring Victoria Laird and Harley Jackson to give Coahulla Creek a 3-0 lead.
However, the Lady Indians fought back. Dilbeck worked out of a second-and-third, two-out jam in the third, but a one-out RBI from Caitlin Sims in the following inning ruined her shutout. Then Madison Wilcox cut the deficit to one with an RBI single in the fifth, scoring Shea Pendley. Osborne followed with a game-tying double to score Ashlee Strong, and Wilcox was thrown out at home to keep the game tied.
In the sixth, Coahulla Creek had an opportunity to regain the lead. Dilbeck led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. However, Lindsey Dunn — Murray County’s winning pitcher — escaped unscathed. Emily Banks struck out, Allie Thompson grounded out and Lasha Hedden flied out, and the Lady Colts stranded their best late-game opportunity.
“That’s been typical of us this year,” Parrott said of his team’s quick start and late fade. “We’ve got to put together a full game.”
Dilbeck pitched all eight innings, allowing four runs off nine hits, for Coahulla Creek. She added a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with a double and two RBIs. Reece finished 2-for-4 with two singles.
Osborne finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Whitney Gribble started on the mound for the Lady Indians and lasted two innings, allowing three earned runs off five hits. She moved to second base while Dunn moved to pitcher. Dunn went six innings, allowing just two hits and three walks and striking out five.
In Dunn’s final inning, she got some defensive help. With Banks starting on second for the Lady Colts thanks to the international tiebreaker, Dunn got Thompson to fly out to right fielder Ariel Smith, who noticed Banks come off the bag enough to throw her out at second for a double play.
“I’m just happy we won,” Johnston said.
Murray County has a chance to reach .500 for the season today, playing at Calhoun beginning at 5 p.m.
