Colts plan to count on Bishop

Eric Bishop plans to join Coahulla Creek High’s track and field coaching staff.

Bishop resigned last week at North Murray High, where he was the head coach for track and field coach and boys basketball, to take a position teaching at Whit-field County’s five middle schools.

On Wednesday, Bishop — a two-time NCAA high jump champion at the University of North Carolina — told The Daily Citizen that he had some preliminary discussions about helping with track at Coahulla Creek, but nothing was certain.

But after Bishop talked with Coahulla Creek track and field coach Chip Fleming on Thursday, his future with the team is more concrete.

“I talked to coach Fleming this afternoon, and he said I could help do the jumps. We had talked about that a little bit,” Bishop said.

Being able to focus on a specific group of athletes is something Bishop is looking forward to.

“I get to concentrate on a select group and focus on my jumpers,” Bishop said. “It’s not something I’ve been able to do before, and if I did, I always felt like I was neglecting the other 50 or 60 in the track program.”

Those events includes the high jump, long jump, triple jump and perhaps the pole vault. He’ll work with both the Colts and Lady Colts.

“I don’t think you can get a better jumping coach around,” Fleming said.

Bishop said nothing is “on paper” and he does not have a coaching “supplement” yet.

“But (Fleming) said today he wants me,” Bishop said.

Fleming said he doesn’t label Bishop as an assistant because he will work with more than just high school athletes.

“Supplement-wise, he actually is going to get a (head coach’s) supplement,” Fleming said. “We work with sixth- through 12th-graders in the track program with (feeder school North Whitfield Middle) and Coahulla Creek.”
