For Murray County’s Blade LeQuire, advancing from the area wrestling tournament to sectionals is nothing new. And if he continues winning at sectionals and reaches the state tournament, he’s been there before, too.
It’s his performance at the big show he wants to improve.
LeQuire, a senior 285-pounder, won his weight class at last weekend’s Area 7-3A tournament to earn another trip to the Class 3A West sectional.
“I’ve been working all season for this,” LeQuire said. “Actually, I’ve been working for this since last year.”
Wrestlers from Dalton, Murray County and Southeast Whitfield will compete at the 3A West sectional at Riverwood High in Sandy Springs, while Coahulla Creek and North Murray wrestlers are at the 2A West sectional at Atlanta’s Blessed Trinity, and Northwest Whitfield wrestlers are at the 4A West sectional at Northside-Columbus. Wrestling begins today at 4 p.m. for all sectional tournaments, with two championship rounds and one round of wrestlebacks scheduled for today. Action resumes at 8 a.m. Saturday.
The top eight finishers in each weight class from the sectional tournaments qualify for state. All five Georgia High School Association classifications will hold their tournaments next week at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth.
At the Area 7-3A tournament, LeQuire was the favorite coming in at 285, and he didn’t disappoint.
His first match of the tournament after getting a first-round bye was over in 21 seconds. He advanced to the finals with another pin before the first period was over, then scored the only point of his title match with Ringgold’s Chase Orr on an escape.
“As soon as I won area,” LeQuire said, “I was thinking that all my hard work paid off.”
LeQuire finished third at area last season, then advanced through sectionals to reach state. But he doesn’t like to talk much about how things went for him at the state tournament, where he lost both of his matches to wrestlers who earned medals.
“Let’s just say I didn’t have a good weekend after that,” he said.
Murray County coach Chris Thornbury believes LeQuire’s experience gained from last year’s trip to state will matter this postseason.
“The experience at the state tournament should help him, and the difference between this year and last year is he is supposed to be here,” Thornbury said. “If you haven’t been there before, and you aren’t sure you belong there, then it’s tough.”
The Indians’ Matthew Crace, who advanced to sectionals after placing third at 220, said LeQuire is at his best on his feet, where he’s both good at scoring takedowns and countering them.
“I don’t ever get to see a lot of people throw him,” Crace said.
Those attributes are what LeQuire will lean on as he takes aim at a state title.
“He’s a great wrestler, and I think he has a really good shot,” Crace said.
LeQuire is one of 22 local wrestlers who advanced to sectionals. Also qualifying for Murray County were Crace and John Duarte, who was fourth at 126 in Area 7-3A. Dalton’s Reinaldo Torres (145) and Sidney Wheeler (182), who brought home area titles, will be joined by Dylan Carlile (120, third at area), and Larry Fernandez (220, fourth).
With six wrestlers going to sectionals, Southeast has the most qualifiers of any local school — Carlos Fraire (220, second), Omar Ruiz (106, third), Lester Paucay (138, fourth), Austin Allen (160, fourth), Edgar Federico (170, fourth) and Jose Ortiz (285, fourth).
“We have four guys wrestling No. 1 seeds in the first round,” Raiders coach Michael Herndon said, “so hopefully we can win those matches and move on to the next round and then state.”
But qualifying from a Northwest Georgia area isn’t easy, Herndon said, and there’s not always a big talent gap between the champion and fourth-place finisher.
“As I told our guys,” he said, “‘We may be a (fourth seed for sectionals), but that doesn’t mean anything compared to how tough our (area) is.’”
Northwest’s Dustin Pendergrass (145), Brian Whitmire (182) and Adam Selby (285) each took home an Area 7-4A title to qualify for sectionals, while Jared Haws (170) and Brandon Davenport (160) each placed fourth.
While the obvious goal for everyone at sectionals is to get into the top eight, Bruins coach Allen Tucker said he doesn’t want his wrestlers to be satisfied with that.
“We’d like to get better, like in the top four,” he said. “If you’re a No. 8 seed, you draw a No. 1 seed at state.”
Three North Murray wrestlers and one from first-year program Coahulla Creek advanced from Area 7-2A.
North Murray’s Ethan Center (160) and Justin Pack (170) each finished third, while Blane Anderson (285) took fourth for the Mountaineers. The Colts’ Francisco Sanchez, who placed fourth at 113, is the first area medalist and sectionals qualifier in his school’s short history.
Last year, 17 of the 19 local wrestlers who qualified for sectionals also advanced to state.
