Prep roundup: Southeast Whitfield starts a busy week with rout

A seven-run burst in the second inning pushed Southeast Whitfield to a 16-0 win over rival Murray County in a non-region victory on Monday in Chatsworth.

The Raiders (3-7) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning and broke the game open in the second. Southeast added three more in the fourth and four more in the fifth. Rhett Harper, Tyler Hale and Blake Foster combined for a three-hit shutout on the mound. Harper pitched three innings and struck out five, Hale struck out the side in the fourth and Foster did the same in the fifth.

“Blake hasn’t thrown off the mound in a couple of years,” Southeast coach Brad Lofton said. “It’s just a good confidence builder going into the rest of the week. That’s what I told our kids, I said enjoy this while you have it and use it to shock the world later in the week.”

Lofton is referring to a four-day slate starting today that includes Region 7-3A games against Heritage-Catoosa, Ringgold and Allatoona.

The Raiders had 15 hits on the day. Foster added two hits — one being a double — and had three RBIs. Hale also had two hits, and Jose Vargas had two hits and a pair of RBIs. Lofton said he was able to play some younger players as Brady Barnett had two hits, including a two-run double, and Austin Walden added a two-run single. Chase Jenkins, Cody Manly and Hunter Young each had RBI singles.

For the Indians (0-7), Damon Roberts, Jake Born and Andrew Corbin each had one hit, and Jake Ice pitched the final inning and did not allow an earned run.

“It started out with pitchers not throwing strikes,” coach Jeff Lanning said. “If you don’t throw strikes and you get behind, you just make it easier for the other team, especially when they are sitting and waiting on a fastball.”

Dalton 11, Pickens 5: The visiting Dragons made a serious bid for a comeback victory, but Dalton reliever Brady Willocks was having none of it.

With Catamounts starter Brandon Dale chased by a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the sixth, Willocks entered and got a strikeout, fielder’s choice and flyout to right field to end the inning. He then struck out the side in the seventh to end the game and give his team its first Region 7-3A victory this season.

“That’s what you need right there,” said coach Bobby Brotherton, whose Cats are 2-9 overall and 1-6 in region play. “It’s a great win for us. We’re still working, trying to get better, but a win’s a win’s a win.”

With two more region games left in the week, Brotherton was also pleased to use just two pitchers in the victory.

Dale picked up the win after allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits while striking out two. He walked three batters and hit two others.

At the plate, he drove in three runs with a single, sac fly and walk. Carter Gillean, Jake Roberts, Grant Sane and Dakota Tankersley each added two hits, and Sane also drove in two runs. Willocks had two RBIs and Matt Wells had a hit and drove in two runs.

Dalton’s biggest burst at the plate came with a six-run fourth inning. The Cats, who scored one run each in the second and fifth, added two runs in the sixth to increase the distance on the scoreboard after Pickens cut the lead to 9-5 in the top of the inning.

Pickens also scored one run each in the second and third.

Christian Heritage 13, Flint River 0: Michael McKinney and Brady Souther combined for a one-hitter, and the Lions pounded out 13 hits at the plate in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

McKinney (3-0) went three innings, allowing a hit and striking out five. Souther pitched the last two innings, recording five of the six outs by strikeout.

At the plate for Christian Heritage (6-2, 4-0 Georgia Independent School Association Region 4-2A), Spencer Robbins went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs, while Trey Mason was 2-for-2 and drove in two runs. McKinney was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Jake Stokes was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs, and Pate Duddleston was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

“We are starting to hit the ball,” Christian Heritage coach Noah Stokes said. “It’s hard to think much is wrong with 13 hits. It is a big week for us, and it is encouraging that we have hit it well.”

The Lions play two region road games this week — at LaGrange Academy today and at undefeated The Heritage School on Thursday.

Coahulla Creek 12, Gordon Central 1: Tyler Higgins improved to 3-0 and the Colts captured their first sub-region victory in a game shortened to six innings by the mercy rule in Calhoun.

Monday’s game was the first of three in Sub-region 7B-2A play this week for the Colts (6-3, 1-2).

“It’s good to get that sub-region win and get it out of the way,” Coahulla Creek coach Michael Bolen said. “We have been working on relaxing. Some of our varsity inexperience is showing a little bit in the sub-region. They finally got back to being themselves tonight.”

Four different players had a multiple-hit night, led by Higgins, who was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Austin Busby and Michael Ward each had two hits, with Busby collecting a pair of doubles along with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. Ward was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Tucker Sheram was 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Bruins coach Jim McGrew said his golfers stuck together, scoring-wise — even among non-counting rounds the highest tally was an 84 — and he was pleased to see them battle for 18 holes.

“I think we’re getting there,” he said. “I’ve kind of been looking for us to show we can hang around when things are not at their best. After about six or seven holes today, they were all six or seven over, but they all kind of hung in there.”

• Marlee Bingham’s 68 led the way for the Northwest Lady Bruins in the St. Pius X Par 3 Tournament at Peachtree Golf Center in Duluth.

Lady Bruins coach John Linder said final place results were not yet available — the field included several other Region 7-4A teams — but he was pleased with what he saw on his players’ scorecards two days after they finished last among nine teams at Dalton’s Lady Catamount Invitational.

“They rebounded from Saturday,” he said. “I think we were all disappointed in the way we played at the Lady Cat. But today the weather was gorgeous out here, and we put up the driver and worked irons and wedges and putters. That really helps us with our short game.”

Dalton girls 90, North Murray 97: Dalton’s Brendi Rockholt shot a 42 to take medalist honors as the Lady Cats won at Indian Trace. Angel Fouche shot a 48 for Dalton’s other counting score. North Murray’s score was composed of Jocelyn Blair (45) and Dara Dople (52).

Pedro Garcia had both goals on Thursday, when the Colts led 2-0 before inclement weather ended play for the night, and he set up two of Barcenas’ goals Monday. Sadoth Fraire had the other assist, with his corner kick setting up a header into the net by Barcenas.

“It’s always good to start a game two goals up,” Colts assistant coach Shannon Coley said. “But it was good to get that game in and past us now.”
