When Southeast Whitfield’s Megan Collins fouled out in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s game at Ridgeland, the Lady Raiders needed someone to step up and secure the team’s first victory of the season.
Tavi Parris was up to the task.
Parris scored 12 points, while Collins and Tiffani Hughes each finished with eight to remove Southeast (1-22, 1-8 Sub-region 7A-3A) from the ranks of the winless with a 36-29 victory over the Lady Panthers in Rossville.
“When Megan fouled out, Tavi really stepped up and took the load on her shoulders and got the job done,” Southeast coach Elizabeth Crane said. “We played a total team effort and finally put four quarters together and got the job done. They executed the game plan and got the win.”
Collins finished with 15 rebounds, while Parris pulled down nine.
• Northwest Whitfield girls 56, Woodland-Bartow 31: The Lady Bruins led 18-6 after one quarter, and they made the good start more than good enough in moving back to the .500 mark in Region 7-4A play.
“We created some turnovers and hit some shots early in the first quarter — we hit four 3s,” Lady Bruins coach Greg Brown said. “We kind of got rolling and never really looked back.”
Kaitlin Wade had 11 points and six rebounds as the leader in both of those categories for Northwest (13-10, 6-6), which led 31-14 at halftime and 48-27 entering the fourth quarter. Alice Ann Barber finished with nine points, all on 3-pointers, and 10 different Lady Bruins scored in the rout.
• Murray County girls 64, Cedartown 44: The Lady Indians outscored host Cedartown 16-4 in the third quarter to take control in a Sub-region 7B-3A contest.
Holly Stanfield had 11 points, Ashley Strong added nine and Kaitlyn Richardson finished with eight to lead a balanced attack by Murray County (7-16, 2-7). Stanfield added eight rebounds.
• Murray County boys 77, Cedartown 72: Jake Ice had 21 points, and the Indians erased a six-point halftime deficit to capture their first Sub-region 7B-3A victory of the year.
Murray County (9-14, 1-7) outscored Cedartown 21-15 in the third quarter to tie the game and finally took the lead in the fourth, making 11 of 14 free throws down the stretch.
“We have been playing pretty well as of late and had a good loss at Allatoona (last week),” Murray County coach Greg Linder said.
“We feel good that we are playing well at the right time.”
Brady Todd finished with 19 points and six rebounds, while Martin Contreras added 14 for the Indians.
• Gordon Central girls 48, Coahulla Creek 40: The Lady Colts cut the Lady Warriors’ lead to two in the fourth quarter, but Gordon Central hit its free throws down the stretch.
“They are still working extremely hard for a team working against such big odds,” Coahulla Creek coach David Friend said. “The last three games, we have really played well. Hopefully we will get one on the scoreboard.”
The Lady Colts are winless in their first season, playing with a roster that is comprised of sophomores and freshmen with one junior.
Erin Orem finished with 12 to lead Coahulla Creek (0-23, 0-12 Sub-region 7A-2A), while Jamie Steadman and Haley Reece each had six.
• Polk County (Tenn.) girls 64, Christian Heritage 53: Polk County’s one-two punch of Emily Watson and Maclain Yowarsky combined to score 48 points, and the Lady Lions couldn’t find an answer while dropping the non-region contest at home.
“We broke their press well after we adjusted to it, but they just shot lights out,” Christian Heritage coach Heather Lowery said. “When you combine that with the fact that we shot 8 of 21 from the free-throw line, we just couldn’t put it together.”
Polk County hit seven 3-pointers in the first half to build a lead that the Lady Lions (18-5) couldn’t overcome despite 23 points and five steals from Maggie Peeples, who was the only Christian Heritage player in double digits.
Despite the loss, Lowery was upbeat with her team heading into the regular-season finale at Dominion Christian.
“This was a very good team. We didn’t rebound very well, but we played hard,” Lowery said. “They really played hard with a lot of intensity. This is the kind of game that is going to make us better.”
• Gordon Central boys 74, Coahulla Creek 48: Coahulla Creek let a 30-19 deficit turn into a 51-29 lead for the host Warriors heading into the fourth quarter, and that was too much for the young Colts to overcome in the Sub-region 7B-2A game.
“In all honesty, we haven’t played a good third quarter all year,” Colts coach Matthew Queener said. “It’s kind of an Achilles’ heel of ours right now. The most important part of a basketball game is the start of the third quarter, but it still seems to be our weakness. We hope we can improve on it when these young guys get older.”
Levi Wilson had 14 points and Jordan Tant added 11 for the Colts (1-22, 1-11).
• Sonoraville girls 54, North Murray 34: Sonoraville jumped out to a 25-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, and the Lady Mountaineers never recovered in the lopsided loss.
“We practiced mediocre yesterday, and it showed,” North Murray coach Keith Robinette said. “You can’t let the other team start that fast and not respond.”
The Lady Mountaineers (12-11, 6-6 Sub-region 7B-2A) were also hurt by shooting just 7 of 23 from the free-throw line. Megan Spivey led the team with eight points.
• Polk County (Tenn.) boys 65, Christian Heritage 44: The Lions’ Michael McKinney finished the game with another double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, but the team’s 3-for-14 start on 3-pointers put Christian Heritage in a deep hole in the first half.
Polk County led 17-8 after one quarter but had stretched the margin to 42-21 by halftime. The Lions, who also got 16 points from Blake Carver, trailed 54-34 entering the fourth.
“We played a lot better in the second half,” Lions coach Chad Woodson said. “We finished out a lot better, we just started out a little slow.”
• Woodland boys 65, Northwest 51: Down by seven at halftime, the Bruins fell into a scoring funk in the third quarter and couldn’t recover on the road.
“We didn’t play nearly as well as we needed to,” Northwest coach Ryan Richards said. “We couldn’t get it cut down in the fourth to give us a chance.”
Daniel Kubin led the Bruins (14-8, 7-5 Region 7-4A) with 14 points, while Colter Creswell and O’Shea Hill finished with 12 and 10, respectively.
• Sonoraville boys 66, North Murray 55: Despite 25 points and 15 rebounds from Zach Vess, the Mountaineers (16-7, 9-3) suffered their first Sub-region 7B-2A loss this season to someone other than Dade County.
• Ridgeland boys 73, Southeast 32: Ashton Storey was the lone scorer in double figures for the Raiders (1-21, 0-9 7A-3A) in the road loss.
Wrestling
• Northwest swept Armuchee and host Southeast in a tri-meet.

Jeremy White (120), Jesus Dominguez (126) and Lester Paucay were all 2-0 with a pair of pins for Southeast. Omar Ruiz (106) and Carlos Fraire (220) were also 2-0, with each winning by a pin and a technical fall.
