Christian Heritage football coach Preston Poag readily admits that in the team’s 2011 preseason scrimmage — their first game under his direction — the Lions played a little scared.
A year in Poag’s system has erased a lot of fear.
Playing against a physically bigger and numerically superior team Friday night in their preseason scrimmage at Chattanooga Central, the Lions came away with a 14-7 loss to the Pounders, but Poag saw plenty of things that he liked.
“I really wasn’t so concerned with the score, but I was sitting there thinking what a difference a year made,” Poag said. “Last year, we played scared a little bit in the scrimmage and it showed. We didn’t back down tonight. We got after them.”
In last year’s scrimmage, the Lions lost 56-7 to Mount Vernon Presybyterian.
The Pounders scored on a long drive in the first half as the two teams went back and forth.
Christian Heritage was driving late in the first half when Chatanooga Central picked off a pass to set up a 14-0 lead at the half. The Lions got on the board in the third quarter with a 10-yard scoring run from Chandler Coley.
“I was pleased,” Poag said. “We made a good many mistakes, but the effort and being physical, I couldn’t have been happier. It was good to get them against some speed. We have come a long way in a year’s time.”
The Lions, who have moved from the Glory For Christ Football League to the GHSA, open the season Aug. 31 at Model.
Poag said the biggest thing for his team to work on between now and that opening contest is building more depth.
“Some of my younger guys, we have to get them coached up a little bit better and have them in position to give our guys that are going both ways a breather,” Poag said. “With our older guys, the other coach said we were a very disciplined team, and that was a great compliment, but you have to have depth.”

Spring football: Teams looking for answers
Dalton High School defensive lineman Rodrick Davidson closes in as quarterback Jase Chastain throws downfield under the watchful eye of head coach Matt Land during a scrimmage on Saturday at the school. Replacing three-year starting quarterback Cole Calfee will be a primary concern for the Catamounts with three players in the mix for the starting role under center. (Matt Hamilton/The Daily Citizen)
Dalton High School football coach Matt Land expects Jase Chastain, Zek Cobb and Payton Veraldi to be on the field plenty next season.
