Qualifying for elected positions in local cities and counties begins Monday. Election day is Nov. 3.
Candidates for Dalton City Council and the Dalton Board of Education can qualify at Dalton City Hall through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Voters will pick council members for Ward 2 (held by Dick Lowrey) and Ward 4 (held by Charlie Bethel). Both are seeking re-election. The qualifying fee is $360.
Voters will elect school board members for two district-wide spots currently held by vice chairman Mark Orr and chairman Steve Williams. The qualifying fee is $35. Both are running for re-election. Qualifying will take place at Dalton City Hall. For information, call city hall at (706) 529-2490.
There are no positions open for election in Whitfield County government.
In Cohutta, three seats are up for election. Mayor Don Henderson declined comment on his plans, Gabriel Powers said he is running for re-election and Sheila Rose could not be reached for comment. Qualifying will be at Cohutta Town Hall. For information, call (706) 694-3330.
Three city council seats are up for election in Tunnel Hill. Posts 3, 4 and 5 are up for election this year. Those seats are currently held by, respectively, Ray Anderson, Alfred “Hub” Griffin and Mayor Kenny Gowin. The city council elects the mayor.
Anderson did not immediately return a message seeking comment and Griffin couldn’t be reached for comment. Gowin said he will seek re-election. Qualifying will be at Tunnel Hill City Hall on Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The qualifying fee is $35 for each position. Candidates for mayor and Posts 1 and 2 in Varnell can qualify through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dan Peeples is the mayor, Carlus Mosier occupies Post 1 and Susan Hamlin holds Post 2. Peeples will run for re-election. Hamlin said she would not run again at this time. Mosier did not immediately return a phone call on Friday. The qualifying fee is $35 for each position. Qualifying will take place at Varnell City Hall. For information, call Varnell City Hall at (706) 694-8800.
In Eton, qualifying for the positions of mayor and Post 2 is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Friday. Billy Cantrell is mayor and said he would run again. Steve Shaw is the Post 2 representative. A phone number for him could not be found. The qualifying fee for the seats was not immediately available. Qualifying will take place at Eton City Hall. In Chatsworth, Posts 1 and 2 are open. Margaret Adams said she plans to qualify for Post 1. A phone number for Ken Wilburn of Post 2 could not be found. The qualifying fee is $133. Qualifying will take place at Chatsworth City Hall. For information, call (706) 695-2834.
