On Saturday, Aug. 20, from 6 to 10:30 p.m. at Heritage Park in downtown Rome, more than 300 Coosa River Basin Initiative (CRBI) supporters will attempt to answer this question “How many unusual activities can you pack into one event?”
This year’s beer and barbecue bash on the banks of the Coosa will feature two new attractions, a floating light display on the Coosa from the makers of Honeypot luminaries in Athens and a bicycle jump into the Coosa courtesy of Cycle Therapy owner Trey Smith of Rome.
The event will also feature the Blue Sky Outfitter Recycled Raft Race and the Seven Hills Rotary Club Ducky Derby along with live music from Red Eye Jedi, boat rides on the river, silent and live auctions and the Barbecue Battle to determine the best barbecue in the Coosa River Basin.
Eagle Rock Distributing and New Belgium Brewing Co. will supply the beer and Barefoot Wine & Bubbly will be on hand with a selection of its wines.
Tickets are available online at www.coosa.org for $40 or $35 each for two or more.
Honeypot will bring its beeswax luminary globes and anchor them in the Coosa to create a beautiful display as the sun goes down over the Coosa.
Prior to this peaceful scene, the Coosa will be rocking from Smith’s Evel Knievel-style jump off a ramp on the banks of the river. Patrons can guess the distance he travels before hitting the water by pledging $1 per foot to CRBI. The individual that guesses closest to Smith’s trajectory wins a $400 Cycle Therapy gift certificate.
Blue Sky Outfitters’ Recycled Raft Race will return for a second year. Teams will compete for a $200 cash purse, a Barefoot Wine gift package and great prizes and gift certificates from Blue Sky Outfitters.
The Seven Hills Rotary Club will hold its Ducky Derby at the event with a $500 cash prize going to one lucky duck racer.
If that’s not enough, patrons will sample delicious barbecue from the region and vote on their favorites. Restaurants and backyard barbecuers will compete for $900 in cash prizes. To enter your team in the Barbecue Battle, contact CRBI Vice President Mike Sarver at (706) 766-4435.
Silent and live auctions will round out the evening. Items up for bid can be viewed at www.coosa.org.
All proceeds from the event support CRBI’s efforts to protect the region’s drinking water sources and North America’s most biologically diverse river basin.
The event is sponsored by Q102, South 107, WRGA, The Rebel 104.9, Floyd Medical Center, State Mutual Insurance, V3 Magazine, Eagle Rock Distributing, Seven Hills Rotary Club of Rome, Southern Heritage Land Co., New Belgium Brewing, Blue Sky Outfitters, Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, 7 Visuals Graphic Design, Cycle Therapy, River City Bank, Dixie Homecrafters, Old Havana Cigar Co., Keep Rome-Floyd Beautiful, Fast Printing, The Finnell Firm, Carvalho & Associates, Ralph White & Friends, Clinton and Gena Agnew, Paper Recovery of Rome and Heritage First Bank.
CRBI is a 501(c)(3) organization with the mission of informing and empowering citizens to protect, preserve and restore North America’s most biologically diverse river basin.

State Champ!
Matt Hamilton/The Daily Citizen Dalton sophomore Susan Meinders, pictured here in April at the Region 7-3A track meet, captured the Class 3A championship in the 300 hurdles in Albany on Saturday.
Dalton girls track athlete Susan Meinders is a very spiritual young lady, who never hesitates to give God the credit in her athletic pursuits. So when the junior came over the next-to-last hurdle at the Georgia High School Association’s Class 3A state track meet, she had no fears even when she hit the top of the hurdle and seemed to stumble.
