The Snake Creek Gap Time Trials return to the rocky Pinhoti Trail today with the first in a series of mountain bike races to be held on the first Saturday of each month through March.
The three races, which are overseen by the Northwest Georgia Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association, are expected to bring in more than $90,000 in tourism and economic impact for the area. The races finish at the trade center.
“Both the 34-mile and 17-mile challenge continue to be an exciting event for riders,” said Conrad Fernandez, president of NWGA-SORBA. “What once started as a small gathering of 50 riders has become an international competition of over 350 riders from all over the United States and Canada.”
During the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the competition will include a North vs. South-themed challenge, with teams divided by region. The trophy for the winner of the competition is on display at the Dalton Freight Depot at 350 S. Depot Street.
This is the ninth year that the Snake Creek Gap Time Trails are being held on the Pinhoti Trail. The second race is scheduled for Feb. 2 and the finale for March 2. To register for the event, visit prerace.com and search keyword “snake creek.”
