The annual Prater’s Mill country fair draws thousands of people to the Varnell area each fall. Now, Varnell officials are trying to create a summer festival for residents and visitors.
The city hosts its inaugural Blackberry Festival Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Varnell Gym and recreation complex at 200 Ruritan Drive.
Officials promises a day full of live music and entertainment, food, arts and crafts, inflatables and other amusements for children.
Admission is free, but there will be a charge to enter the children’s area.
The Varnell City Council deserves credit for trying to find new ways to bring in visitors from outside the area as well as providing something for local folks to do during the summer. The gym parking lot is already host to a weekly farmer’s market, and this event could help bring more attention to that attraction.
If successful, the Blackberry Festival could grow into a yearly event that brings in visitors who might also take the time to see more of Whitfield County’s sites and spend money here.
If you don’t have other plans for Saturday, swing by the Varnell gym. You can have a good time and support your local community.
