The members of the Dalton Arts Project Board are pleased to read that you understand the value of the annual “Nutcracker” production within our community. We believe this event is a truly unique and exceptional component of the Dalton holiday tradition and we agree the event should be held in Dalton.
However, there is no venue in the community that can adequately support a production of the “Nutcracker’s” size and quality. Our show has grown to include complex set designs, multiple performing casts and an incredible audience that always exceeds the capacity of the theaters available in Dalton.
After much deliberation and considering many options — including other local venues — the board decided the Colonnade in Ringgold would be the best choice for our performers and their families.
We hope to bring the production back to Dalton, but that can only happen if we are able to find an appropriate space.
Dalton needs a performing arts theater if this community expects to reap the benefits, both economic and cultural, of performances and productions coming to the area. This theater could be used not only for the “Nutcracker” but also as a tool to attract other performances which would certainly help grow our community.
Nevertheless, the “Nutcracker’s” move to the Colonnade does not in the least detract from its status as a community event. The dancers and volunteers are largely from the Dalton area. And this year more Dalton community members than ever before will get to experience the beloved “Nutcracker” magic.
The “Nutcracker” has grown more than 60 percent in the past five years, and our growth has outpaced the theatrical resources of our community. We continue to seek an appropriate venue in Dalton. Dalton is our home and chief source of support. We have not forgotten that, and it will always remain a key consideration in our decision-making.

Voters should be wary of state’s promises
For a couple of years, some Whitfield County residents kept asking when they would see results from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) voters approved in 2007.
