Citizen of the Week: Tillie Hughes

When Tillie Hughes, a rising junior at North Murray High School, thought about her upcoming birthday recently, rather than ask for gifts for herself she thought of others, children at T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.

With her friends’ help, Tillie collected 158 toys for the children at the hospital, and recently delivered them to Ali Dunn, annual giving director for the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Tillie is the daughter of Jeff and Lisa Hughes of Chatsworth. Her thoughtfulness had special meaning for Millie Hicks, who has been involved with the development of Whitfield County’s Miracle Field at the Westside Park that will allow special needs children to enjoy the thrills of baseball and softball.

“Having a special needs daughter of my own (Peyton), who has spent her share of time in hospitals, I know how important these toys can be in helping to lift the spirits of these children during difficult times,” said Hicks. “I am happy to nominate Tillie for her compassion and her selflessness at such a young age.”

For her willingness to forego gifts for herself so that the children of T.C. Thompson might enjoy brighter days, The Daily Citizen names Tillie Hughes Citizen of the Week.
