On Friday afternoon, June 8, an old friend and I were on our way to Ooltewah, Tenn., to visit family members. We were stopped at a traffic light in Dalton only blocks away from getting onto I-75 when we both suddenly noticed the smell of something burning, while thick smoke was pouring over the hood of my van from the passenger side.
I knew we had to get off the road immediately, and through sheer good luck pulled off right onto the parking lot of Dalton Fire Station No. 3. Our guardian angels were working overtime that day because we soon found REAL guardian angels in the form of the kind and helpful members of Ladder No. 3 of Dalton Fire Station No. 3.
The right front brake and bearings on my car were totally shot (and “on fire”) and the tire was smoking when we pulled off the road, but thanks to Ladder No. 3, AAA and your local Goodyear shop (great job, Goodyear guys!) all was under control by the time our gracious relatives drove down and picked us up.
Ironically, it was my birthday, but given the circumstances it could not have turned out better. Our experience in Dalton proves the truth of those old sayings about the warmth of Southern hospitality as well as the ones about firefighters being “The Best of the Best.”
I just wanted to let your local community know how much it means in an emergency to have the privilege of meeting such fine people, especially those good men of Ladder No. 3. Their thoughtfulness and genuine concern turned a disaster into an experience my friend and I will always remember with gratitude. Be proud, Dalton — you deserve it!
