While it may be months before details are determined on the makeup of Dalton State College’s athletics program, which is relaunching after decades of dormancy, an enthusiastic Derek Waugh, the new athletics director, gave every impression that he’ll make getting there an enjoyable ride.
We, too, share that same zeal.
We believe a healthy athletics program is just the tool needed to create campus, alumni and community unity. Initially, plans are to apply for membership in an athletic conference in the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). DSC’s sports programs will begin with funding from the student athletic fees that have been collected since last semester, but Waugh said advertising and booster support will also play a big role along the way.
We believe and also recognize that it takes money to get these programs launched and competitive. To build that support, nothing works faster than having athletes from in and around the community the school serves most.
Who better to be at home games than parents, grandparents, friends and extended families?
And what two sports rosters could be more homegrown than softball and baseball?
DSC could build programs with local students and be very competitive. This area has a rich baseball and softball history with a lot of local talent. Regardless of which sports are ultimately chosen to get the ball rolling, as you might say, we are excited about the future of athletics at DSC.
