You couldn’t ask for a better fall weekend than the one forecasters are predicting for northwest Georgia. The National Weather Service says temperatures should reach the mid to high 70s both Saturday and Sunday. It should be sunny on Saturday, with just a slight chance of showers on Sunday.
So there’s no excuse to stay cooped up in your house or apartment, especially since there’s so much going on around the Greater Dalton area.
For instance, the annual Prater’s Mill Country Fair returns on both days, with some 200 vendors selling everything from homemade jams to organic vegetables to various arts and crafts. Both days the Prater’s Mill stage will be filled with musical acts and dance groups. There will be canoe rides and pony rides for the children. And of course, there’s the chance to tour the historical mill and general store.
The fair takes place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $7, with children under 12 admitted free. Parking is free.
In addition, the Special Olympics Georgia 2012 State Fall Games will be taking place at several places across Whitfield County today, Saturday and Sunday. More than 1,300 athletes from across the state are expected to take part in bocce, cycling, softball and walking and running events. You won’t find better sportsmanship anywhere, so if you have some free time come out and cheer on these athletes.
And David DesRochers, assistant professor of biology at Dalton State College, will lead a hike on the mile-long Cascade Trail of the DSC trail system starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. The hike will focus on southbound migratory birds. Hikers will meet at the kiosk near the service drive by the parking garage on George Rice Drive. Hikers should dress comfortably with special emphasis placed on comfortable, sturdy shoes, preferably hiking boots. For more information, call John Lugthart at (706) 272-2485.
So get out and take part in some of these events. You’ll have a good time and meet some interesting people.
