Citizens of the Week: John Frank Patterson and Brady Pendley

— Most kids are excited about their birthdays with good reason. In addition to celebrating another year of being alive and often getting some fun time with friends, birthdays for most children are an occasion for receiving at least a little something extra in the way of toys, games or clothes.

Yet two Dalton boys, Brady Pendley and John Frank Patterson, decided to forego the gifts and do something for other kids. The 9-year-olds recently held a joint birthday party in which they asked guests to bring a donation for the Whitfield County Miracle Field instead of presents. They raised more than $700.

The Miracle Field is under construction at Westside Park and is a softball field specially built for children who have various disabilities. Numerous fundraisers have been held for the field, and the grand opening is set for Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. Miracle League games will be played that day.

“We are so happy to accept a donation from two fine young men who have displayed such thoughtfulness through this incredibly generous and selfless gesture,” said Millie Hicks, Miracle League spokeswoman. “The money raised will go to help provide uniforms and equipment for our first season.”

Brady is the son of Tom and Cami Pendley, and John Frank’s parents are John and Kiran Patterson. For their concern for others, The Daily Citizen names them Citizens of the Week.
