Editorial: Dalton takes pride in Hennon’s success

Georgia Southern University baseball coach Rodney Hennon and his teams make winning look easy. The team has never had a losing season in the 13 years since the Dalton native became coach.

His teams have won at least 30 games each year since he arrived in Statesboro, and he is the second most successful coach in the school’s history.

But as a story in The Daily Citizen last week noted, winning isn’t always easy, even for the very best teams.

The Eagles finished 33-27 this year, a solid record. But they had to overcome a great deal of adversity to get there. One of Hennon’s top players, right fielder Victor Roache, broke his wrist early in the season. But several players stepped up, including two other Dalton High School graduates, designated hitter Garren Palmer and Stryker Brown, who took over for Roache in right field.

Palmer finished the season with a .309 batting average and a selection to the Southern Conference All-Tournament Team. Brown, who is Hennon’s nephew, excelled on defense, making just two errors during the season.

“We made some strides as the season went on and played great baseball in the conference tournament. Our team fought hard all year,” Hennon told The Daily Citizen.

Hennon has established a record of excellence as a coach. That’s a record that he, his teams and his school should be proud of. His success is certainly something that Dalton is proud of.
