Regarding the story “Off the leash” from the Dec. 23 Sunday edition, I thank Mr. Babb for seeing the issue for what it is, a problem with irresponsible pet owners and not the breed of dog.
I noticed the story says Ms. Powers was chased by a “pit bull” and not bitten. However, the story says she was a dog-bite victim involving another canine in the past. The breed of the offending dog wasn’t mentioned, I assume it wasn’t a pit bull and that breed wouldn’t be sensational enough to name for the article. After all, we wouldn’t want to cause an undeserved hysteria over cockers or labs like we have pit bulls and Rottweilers.
If the dog who chased Ms. Powers had been anything other than a pit bull would this story have even been considered news?

Letter: A Father’s Day tribute
There is some question as to whether the first Father’s Day was started in the U.S. by Dr. Welch in 1908 or by Sonora Dodd on June 19, 1910. In 1924 President Coolidge proclaimed the third Sunday in June as a national memorial for Father’s Day.
