Root for the Lady Bruins

DALTON — No matter where you live in Whitfield County or Murray County, or what team you root for, it will be cool to wear blue today.

For many of us, the seasons revolved around team sports; football in the fall, basketball in the winter, baseball in the spring and summer.

This afternoon at 3 p.m., however, one team, the Lady Bruins of Northwest High School, will get to do something that few teams ever have the chance to do — play for a state championship.

It takes a substantial amount of athletic skill to reach a state championship game in any sport, but that is only a small part of what it takes to get to this point. It takes dedication, mental toughness, teamwork and perseverance to get through the rough spots that any season brings with it.

It is those qualities, more so than being able to shoot a basketball through a hoop hanging 10 feet above the ground, that make a championship drive worth celebrating.

In fact it is these qualities, win or loose today, that these girls will be able to take with them for the rest of their lives.

But such talk is for the future.

Today is about rallying around this team and rooting them on.

They already know they will have a substantial crowd behind them when they take the court at The Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth at 3 p.m. to take on Southwest DeKalb.

On Wednesday, an estimated 600 to 700 fans made the trip from Tunnel Hill to support the Lady Bruins and more will pour down I-75 today.

But even if you can’t make it to the arena, it will be hard to miss the buzz around the area. It was hard to go somewhere Wednesday evening without hearing someone ask “how did the Lady Bruins do,” and the same will be true today.

The game will be broadcast on WYYU-104.5, so everyone will have a chance to follow the action live.

So be tolerant of the radio on in the cubicle next to you and understand if someone takes a late lunch break.

The chance to compete for a championship is worth celebrating and that is what we should all be doing today.
