Will Dee Baxter

Miss Will Dee Baxter, a longtime educator in Murray County, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009. She had been a resident of Dalton since 2001, and was currently residing at Peachtree Assisted Living Estates with her beloved sister, Stella Pearl Baxter, at the time of her death.

She was of the Methodist faith, having been baptized at an early age when she joined the Summerour Methodist Church. She was known for giving out fliers of inspiration to others even to her death.

Those who knew “Dee,” as she was so fondly called by her family members, or “Miss Baxter,” as she was known by her students during her 45-year tenure in teaching for the Murray County school system. Dee was such a delight to all who knew her, and a never-ending love for the second-graders was evident until her passing.

Some of her former students still corresponded with her on a regular basis and paid her visits often. A recent highlight of her life was attending her seventy-third high school reunion at Murray County High School this past November. She received a bachelor of science degree in education from North Georgia College in Dahlonega.

Miss Baxter was preceded in death by her parents, D.O. Baxter and Florence Bookout Baxter; two sisters, Lorene Baxter Headrick and Mildred Baxter Petty; two brothers, Denver Olen Baxter and George Houston Baxter of Crandall.

She is survived by her sister, Stella Pearl Baxter; a brother, Arthur Baxter; a sister-in-law, Barbara Baxter; a brother-in-law, Cecil Petty, all of Crandall. She also had 12 niece and nephews, 38 great-nieces and nephews, and several great-great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Miss Baxter will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Peeples Funeral Home with the Rev. Ed Smith and Erik Gallman officiating. Interment will follow in the Sumach Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery with great-nephews David O. Headrick, Lavon Headrick, Greg Ball, Mark and Jason Finlayson, Joel Cox and nephew Allan Ensley serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday between the hours of 4 and 8 p.m.
