The Rev. G.A. Hamby began his ministry at the age of 15. He has since ministered in churches, tents, missions, television, radio and in publications. He has labored as an evangelist, teacher, pastor and missionary, and he has worked with some of the greatest ministers of modern times.
He attended Bible school and business college and served in the U.S. Army.
He established and helped build numerous churches across the United States, overseas and on an Indian reservation in Arizona. He established, built and pastored a church in Dalton for 21 years before coming to Fort Payne, Ala., where he pastored for the past 32 years. He has been chaplain with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department for 27 years, serving with Sheriff Harold Richards, Sheriff Cecil Reed and Sheriff Jimmy Harris.
He has served as an evangelist in churches and tents across the nation where there have been thousands saved and healed. He was named “Champion Soul Winner” and presented a banner proclaiming such before an audience of 10,000 people. He spent six years doing missionary work, making more than 40 trips to Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Argentina, Bolivia, South Africa, Canada, Venezuela, Brazil, Costa Rico, England and Kenya.
Since he became pastor at New Testament, his efforts have been responsible for a beautiful church building with seating in the sanctuary for 1,000 people and a chapel and educational rooms downstairs.
A visitation for friends and family will be today from 4 to 7 p.m at Wilson Funeral Home in Fort Payne, Ala.
The funeral will be Saturday from New Testament Church with viewing starting at 1 p.m. and the funeral beginning at 2 p.m.
