Margaret Duckworth Sewell of Atlanta died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at her daughter’s residence after a period of declining health.
She was born in Atlanta, the daughter of Lon and Ruth Paden Duckworth, on Sept. 4, 1928.
After graduating from Druid Hills High School and Wesleyan College, she married Roy B. Sewell Jr. and they moved to Bremen where they were actively involved in the community and raised their three daughters, Peggy, Cyndie and Janet.
In 1981 she returned to her hometown of Atlanta where she spent the remainder of her life. Throughout her adult life she entertained herself with reading, crossword puzzles and needlework. She was awarded the Golden Needle Award by the American Needlework Guild.
As an avid reader, she was familiar to the staff at her local branch of the library as she came in weekly to pick up a stack of best sellers she had reserved. Some of her favorite times were spent with her friends from Druid Hills and Wesleyan, shopping with her daughters and granddaughters, and taking the children to Fernbank Science Center, Zoo Atlanta and watching them swim in her pool. She took great pride in her father’s heritage from the north Georgia mountains and if given her choice to travel anywhere, she would always choose the mountains.
A loyal and enthusiastic alumna of Wesleyan College, she served on the Alumnae Association Board of Managers and was honored by her alma mater when they presented her with the Alumnae Award for Distinguished Service to the College.
She is survived by three generations of immediate and extended family, Peggy and Steve Cantrell, Cyndie and Larry Morris, Janet and Joe King, Brooke and Jim Halverson, Aimee and Derek Lashley, Sunny and Jeremy Crane, Bryan King, Tiffany and Scott Pearch, Ron and Marita Cantrell, Karen and Andy LeCates, Bowen, Lily and Grant Halverson, Isaac and Zyler Crane, Camden and Ethan Lashley, Michael Yearty, McKensey Pearch, Kaitlyn and Jackson King, Lee and Chris Cantrell, Jenna and Chloe LeCates. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the lights of her life, always bringing joy to her life and a smile to her face.
The family received friends at Hightower Funeral Home in Bremen on Saturday. The funerais today at Northside United Methodist Church in Atlanta at 3:30 p.m. with visitation immediately preceding the service.
The family requests that flowers be omitted in lieu of donations to one of her four favorite organizations: Wesleyan College, Young Harris College, Northside United Methodist Church or Project Wildfire.
