Rev. Billy Ted Smith, 60, of Dalton, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday evening, Jan. 31, 2012, at the Hutcheson Medical Center in Fort Oglethorpe.
Billy was born June 25, 1951, in Dalton, a son of the late Arthur Lee Smith Sr. and Ruby Lee Patton Smith. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Lee Smith Jr.; a sister, Elizabeth Smith; and a sister-in-law, Patsy Smith.
Billy was a faithful follower of Christ and dedicated his life to helping others. He was the director of the Upper Room Mission in downtown Dalton since 1997. He was the author of the “Cry From The Highway” in the local paper. He was a loving husband, father, son and brother.
He is survived by his wife, Staci Payne Smith; children, Caleb Smith, Tyler Smith, Aaron Smith and Emily Smith, all of the home; sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Buddy Marchman, Mary and Berry Burkett and Janis Daughtry; brothers and sisters-in-law, Denver and Maggie Smith, Frank and Nell Smith and Raymond Smith, all of Dalton; father-in-law and mother-in-law, the Rev. Johnny and Mary Payne of Eton; sisters-in-law, Gina Cronan and Laura Beth Crow, both of Calhoun; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services to celebrate the life of the Rev. Billy T. Smith will be held Friday at 4 p.m. at the Melrose Chapel of Ponders Funeral Home with the Rev. Johnny Payne officiating. He will be laid to rest at the Whitfield Memorial Gardens with David Jolly, Wayne Snyder, Mark Bowen, Lane Jones, Carlton Bradley, Tommy Parsons, Gene Stong and Zach Crow serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Friday from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to an educational fund for his children. Donations may be sent to P.O. Box 4120, Dalton, GA, 30719.
