Al Follachio, 94, of Dalton, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 15, 2013, at The Gardens at Royal Oaks, his residence.
An avid golfer until the age of 92, he could often be seen at the Dalton Golf and Country Club hitting a bucket of balls, chipping and putting long after he had lost the stamina to play 18 holes.
He was most proud of having served in World War II and of his active membership and service to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church since returning to Dalton in 1972. His extensive volunteerism included being on the boards of Looper Speech and Hearing, United Way, Roman Open and St. Vincent de Paul.
After retiring from Uniroyal Chemical, he formed Belmont Chemical which still exists and is led by his daughter, Christine. He loved going to the office until well in his 90s to have lunch with all his friends.
Al’s zest for life was seen in all he did, including his recent life at The Gardens where he made new friends. Until his late 80s, he continued to travel to Connecticut to visit remaining family.
Being the fourth of eight children, he is survived by his sisters, Sister Mary Madeline of West Hartford, Conn., and Mary Melchiore of Prospect, Conn., numerous nieces and nephews.
His pride in his Italian heritage and hard-working immigrant parents was apparent.
He was predeceased in 2003 by his loving wife of 65 years, Claire (Arcand) to whom he was greatly devoted. He is survived by daughter Pegi Follachio of Atlanta; daughter and son-in-laws Jan and Michael Bloom of Atlanta and Christine and Larry Duffie of Dalton; grandchildren, Dirk and Julie Butters of Golden, Colo., Claire and Derek Moss of Hendersonville, N.C.; Hannah and William Duffie and great-grandchildren, Jack, Ava, and Harrison Moss; Abigail and Mira Butters.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in his name to St. Vincent de Paul of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 968 Haigmill Lake Road, Dalton, GA 30720, to Looper Speech and Hearing, 1011 Professional Blvd., Dalton, GA 30720 or to Hamilton Hospice, P.O. Box 1168 Dalton, GA 30722-1168.
A private family service and internment will be at a later date.
Arrangements are by Ponders Melrose Chapel, Dalton; (706) 226-4002.
