Bon Allen Lovingood, 91, of Dalton, passed away Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, at Wood Dale Nursing Home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Allen Nathan and Flossie Mae Quarles Lovingood, and sister, Harriet Lovingood McDaniel.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Bon was in the United States Navy from May 14, 1942, to Dec. 17, 1945, and was served on board the Heavy Cruiser, USS Tuscaloosa from Dec. 14, 1942, to Nov. 3, 1945. The “Mighty T” and the “Black Warrior” participated in the invasion of North Africa of 1942; carrier strikes on Norway, in 1943; invasion of Normandy on D-Day (where they were the first ship behind the mine sweeps); and the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa in 1945. The Tuscaloosa was called the “Lucky Ship” because, with exception of an antenna mast, they were never hit. Bon received the American Campaign Medal, the European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal and the Chinese Service Medal.
He was past commander of the VFW and honorary lifetime member. He was past patron of Chapter #65 of O.E.S. and was a member of Dalton Masonic Lodge #105 F&AM.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Louise Lovingood of Dalton; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Harold Brock of Dalton; son, Daniel A. Lovingood of Dalton; sister, Jean Scott of Dalton; brothers, Raymond and Billy Lovingood of Dalton; three grandchildren, Dana Brock Gentry, Dustin Aaron Brock and Esther Rebecca Alan Lovingood; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Hoyt Jenkins and Rev. David Blackwood officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Pleasant Grove Chapel of Julian Peeples Funeral Home.
