Doris Tarvin Allen, 77, passed peacefully after a short illness on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013.
She was the loving wife of Dr. Joe F. Allen for 57 years, and a resident of Clemson, S.C., for 49 years.
She was predeceased by her parents, Walt and Ruby Tarvin of Rocky Face.
Doris loved and appreciated her children, Debby Brackett (Bob) and R. Trent Allen (Ginger) and her grandchildren Robert (Kaley) and Jeremy Allen, Luke (Jessica), Daniel and Winona Brackett. She is also survived by a brother, Gene Tarvin, of Rocky Face.
Loved and admired by her large extended family and many friends, Doris was a noted needleworker and instructor who conducted workshops nearby and across the country from New York to Salt Lake City. She and her son, Trent, opened Allens’ Creations Frame and Art Gallery in Clemson in 1976.
Doris and Joe “adopted” many students over the years as active members of First Baptist Church of Clemson. They were named Danforth Associates for “humanizing the educational experience” due to their work with Clemson University students.
She loved to travel across the U.S.A. and beyond, visiting all 50 states. Highlights of her travels included taking each grandchild on a “dinosaur-hunting” trip for his/her 10th birthday, snow skiing and “canyon-hopping,” especially in southern Utah.
Doris graduated from West Side High School in Villanow and played on the state championship basketball team in 1957. She attended Berry College where she met Joe and “the rest is history,” forming a life filled with wonderful family and friends.
Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Clemson First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to7:30 p.m. at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central, and also from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Sunday at Clemson First Baptist Church.
Condolences may be expressed online at www.robinsonfuneralhomes.com or in person at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, which is assisting the family.
