James Marshall Painter, 91, passed away Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, in the Gracemont Assisted Living/Memory Care Facility in Cumming.
He was born on July 12, 1921, in Dalton, the son of the late Ishmael and Josie Painter. He graduated from Georgia Tech University in 1941 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for Dalton Utilities for 34 years.
Marshall was active in several churches over the years. He was instrumental in planning the columbarium at the First United Methodist Church, and he assisted with building Trinity Methodist Church. He was active in the First Baptist Church as well.
Marshall was preceded in death by two loving wives, Betty Elizabeth Painter and Margaret Ella Painter, as well as a sister, Francis Boggs.
Marshall is survived by his daughters, Clara Ellen Painter and her husband Bill Swift, Donna M. Painter and her husband John R. Soules, and his two sons, Scott M. Painter and his wife Patricia, and David W. Painter and his wife Jan. In addition, he is survived by his brother-in-law, Trammell Scott and his wife Annelle.
Also surviving are Marshall’s stepchildren, Randy and Lynn Wills, Suzanne and Marty Booth, David and Tina Wills, and Joey and Kimberly Wills; grandchildren, Kurt M. Painter, Hannah G. Painter, Madison Painter, Davis Painter, Julie Daughtery and her husband Patrick, and Erin Libby and her husband Oliver; and his step-grandchildren, Kim and Jason Sleeman, Jenny Wills, Matt Wills, Michael Booth, Heather and Chris Tipton, David and Wendy Booth, Kevin and Jennifer Booth, Christy and Kevin Wingfield, Mellisa and Andreas Herz, Bennett Wills and Colby Wills.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church Chapel with the Rev. Paul Hannah officiating. Following the service, friends and family will gather in the Fellowship Hall at the church.
