Mr. Charles Earlie Coker, 75, of Dalton, departed this life on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at his residence.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Johnson Coker; his mother and father, Flora B. Lewis and John Coker; his brother, John H. Lewis Jr.; his uncle, retired Lt. Col. Marvin D. Bennett of Dahlonega; and his brother-in-law, Jerry E. Alexander of Mableton.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Elizabeth (Liz) Alexander of Mableton; brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Joanne Lewis; mother-in-law, Velma Johnson; his aunt, Becky Bennett of Dahlonega; best friend, Marie Deal Arnold; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Charles was born Feb. 20, 1937, in Dalton. He was a 1957 graduate of Dalton High School where he starred in football and baseball. He continued his education at Middle Tennessee State University. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf. Charles was a lifetime fan of Georgia Tech. Although not eligible for the draft, he was proud to have served several years in the local National Guard.
Charles was retired from Alcoa, having developed and managed their local ATH facility. He contributed significantly to many charities, most notably St. Jude Children’s Hospital and the American Cancer Society.
Services to celebrate the life of Charles Earlie Coker will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Eleventh Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Beavers and the Rev. Ronald Guffey officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Melrose Chapel of Ponders Funeral Home.
The burial will be in West Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Woody Glenn, Eddie Miles, George Cross, Jerry Deal, Glenn Smith and T.R. Etheridge.
