John Hershel ‘Spank’ Wofford

Mr. John Hershel “Spank” Wofford, 83, of Dalton, departed this life Wednesday evening, Feb. 13, 2013, at the local hospital.

Spank was born May 30, 1929, in Dalton, a son of the late Johnny and Jenny Mae Brock Wofford. He was also preceded in death by two sons, James and Ed Wofford, and a sister, Jenny Mae Cudd.

He was the owner of Southeast Whitfield Carpets. He was a member and deacon of Tilton Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret Elizabeth Lumpkin Wofford of the residence; daughter and son-in-law, Margie and Dan Bohannon of Calhoun; sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Robin Wofford, Earl and Devon Wofford; brother, Gene Wofford; sister, Rosa Stephens, all of Dalton; 16 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Services to celebrate the life of Mr. John Hershel “Spank” Wofford will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Ponders Melrose Chapel with the Rev. Marvin Brock officiating.

He will be laid to rest at Tilton Baptist Church Cemetery with Seth Bohannon, Jeffery Wofford, Joshua Wofford, Lamar Wofford, Ryan Stinson, Zack Bramblett and Randall Green serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Ron Stephens, Chris Cloer, Austin Walden and Devin Walden.

The family will receive friends at Ponders Melrose Chapel from 5 to 9 p.m. today and Saturday and after noon on Sunday until the service hour.
