George Alvin Souther, 89, of the Dawnville community, departed this life on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 11, 1923, in the Deep Springs community and was the son of the late Lucius and Mary Souther.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Alvin Souther; two brothers, C.H. Souther and Dennis Souther; two sisters, Ruth Souther and Anne Addis; best friends, Clyde Edwards and Howard Davis.
George was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He graduated from Varnell High School in 1942 and is remembered as their star basketball player. Upon graduation, he served as a medic in the South Pacific under Gen. Douglas McArthur during World War II. When he returned home after military duty, he eventually became a co-owner of Fraker Hardware where he worked for 45 years until retirement.
George was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in the Dawnville community where he lived. He is best known by those who knew him for his generosity, kindness, volunteerism and good-natured mannerisms. One of his favorite past-times was enjoying the company and friendly conversations of his friends and family. If you ever drove by and saw him sitting under his favorite shade tree and there was an empty chair next to him, that meant, “why don’t you stop and talk?” While you were there, he’d probably show you his vegetable garden that he loved to grow each year and even offer you a tomato or two to take home with you.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Josephine Souther of the residence; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dwight and Donna Souther and Mark and Rhonda Souther, all of Dalton; daughter and son-in-law, Becky and David Dillard of Dalton; eight grandchildren, Tera Steele, Ginger Souther, Michelle Dillard, Shannon Boyd, Jason Souther, Evan Souther, Jess Souther and Morgan Souther; five great-grandchildren, Alicia Brown, Austin Tibbs, Brittney Baynes, Sydney Boyd and Grace Dillard.
The funeral to celebrate the life of Mr. George Souther will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Pleasant Grove Chapel of Julian Peeples Funeral Home with the Rev. James Boyd officiating.
Burial will be in Deep Springs Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Jason Souther, Jess Souther, Evan Souther, Morgan Souther, Austin Tibbs and Jason Boyd. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Addis, Lynn Addis, Sammy Souther, Jimmy Jones, LaDon Wells and Sammy Faw.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 4 to 8 p.m.
