Savannah hotel tax collections set record in 2012

SAVANNAH (AP) — Hotel and motel tax collections in the Savannah area set a new record for the third consecutive year in 2012.

The 6 percent tax generated $17 million in revenue. Savannah acting city manager Stephanie Cutter said the lodgings tax is an important source of revenue for the city as it continues to recover from the 2008  recession.

In 2012 occupancy rate at hotels and motels countywide rose to 63.7 percent. That’s up from 61.3 percent in 2011. The most popular destination was the historic district where occupancy rate was 74.4 percent.

Joe Marinelli, leader of Visit Savannah, told the Savannah Morning News the city is one of the few U.S. tourism destinations showing consistent growth. He said the revenue growth is helped by the city’s wide range of events.
