FAYETTEVILLE — A Fayette County woman pleaded with neighbors and other residents to “help us find justice” after her 44-year-old granddaughter was shot and killed during a burglary at their home that remains unsolved.
“My heart is broken,” said the grandmother of Denice Roberts, who died in her arms Aug. 10 after she was shot by an intruder fleeing from their home. “Whoever did this took not only my granddaughter’s life, but my reason for living.”
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/MCQ7DS) Fayette County sheriff’s investigators are still searching for the shooter who killed Roberts, who had cerebral palsy. Her grandmother appeared with authorities at a news conference Friday to ask the public for information in the case. Sheriff’s officials asked reporters not to identify the 78-year-old woman because she fears for her life with the killer still at large.
Sheriff’s spokesman Brent Rowan said more than one burglar may have been inside Roberts’ home and become startled when she and her grandmother returned from an outing at 11:30 a.m. Roberts was shot in the head by an intruder who fired a gunshot while fleeing through the back door.
Rowan denounced the killing as senseless. He noted that at Roberts’ funeral there was a plaque honoring her for 35 years of perfect attendance at Sunday school.
“It’s our duty to protect these people,” Rowan said. “There was just no rhyme or reason” to the slaying.
Robert’s grandmother said they both needed each other.
“She was my best friend, and I’m lost without her,” she said. “Help us find justice.”
