Each year, Keep Dalton/Whitfield Beautiful (KDWB) kicks off with the statewide Christmas tree recycling event, “Bring One For The Chipper.” This year is no exception. Residents of Dalton and Whitfield County can bring their live, undecorated tree to The Home Depot Saturday, Jan.5 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Participants will receive a free seedling and Chick-fil-A coupon, while supplies last.
The purpose of the “Bring One For The Chipper” event is to produce tangible environmental benefits while helping local governments comply with state regulations that prohibit the disposal of yard trimmings in municipal landfills. Whitfield County public works will be providing a chipper for the event. The mulch produced from the recycled trees will be used for public beautification projects and is free to residents of Whitfield County.
“We hope everyone comes out to the Chipper event this year,” explains Bridget Sanford, recycling/education coordinator. “We will have free seedlings for participants. While you’re dropping off your tree, you can spend all of those Home Depot gift cards you received for Christmas!”
“Bring One For The Chipper” would not be possible without the support of state and local sponsors. State sponsors for this year’s event include Keep Georgia Beautiful, The Georgia Department of Community Affairs, The Home Depot, The
Davey Tree Expert Company and WXIA-TV. Local sponsors include Keep Dalton/Whitfield Beautiful, the Dalton/Whitfield Regional Solid Waste Management Authority, City of Dalton, Whitfield County, the Georgia Forestry Commission.
If residents can not participate on the day of the event, other opportunities are available.
City of Dalton public works department will collect trees from the curb now through Jan. 5. City residents should call 706/278-7077 for pick-up.
All Whitfield County transfer stations and the landfill will have drop-off locations beginning Dec. 26. These stations collect yard debris year round.
Anyone who wishes to recycle their Christmas tree should remove all nails, hooks, wires, tinsel, lights and ornaments. Trees must be live, no artificial trees please.
